I was there in those days and remember the National brand tape recorders. They worked well but required some adjustments to the volume and tone controls to be reliable.
The most important thing about cassette recorders is their maintenance.
One would need to often clean the heads, capstan and pinch rollers with isopropyl alcohol.
Occasionally some tape recorders required some minute head position adjustments that was done with a jewellers' screwdriver.
