System-80 Modern accessories. - rcrook9190 - 21-10-2024

Hi All,

Getting a System-80 from a friend soon and was wondering about modern storage solutions or non- destructive mods to make it more usable.

I don't know a great deal about the system and am a noob to the eco system. Is the expansion connector on the back S100 and are there any DIY S100 bus expansion projects out there?

I remember playing with a friends System 80 way back and have been looking for one for my collection for a while now. Looking forward to playing with it.

Hi and welcome to the forum Smile

No, the 50way out the back is not directly S-100 compatible. The Expansion Unit for the System 80 contains S-100 support though so I suppose a standalone S-100 adapter is possible. What do you want from an S-100 port on the System-80 ?

I'd love to see modern accessories for the System 80. I even had a go at making my own. Alas, I lack the electronics skill to complete them.
The project that got the furtherest along was an adapter to allow you to use a System 80 with a TRS-80 model 1 expansion interface. I finished the design, but never got around to testing it.
I'd love to see a single board that gives you 48k (or more) of RAM and a disk drive interface of some sort. Even just something simple I can plug a Gotek into.

Cheers!

John

There is a mini-expander available, but a bit expensive - https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/156471132881
