Premium+ Select disk image with '~' in the filename - langra - 27-03-2024

Hi,

I've been having a play with my Premium Plus after rediscovering it during an archaeological dig on the spare desk in my study. Smile

I have several image files on the SD card with long DOS filenames that have a tilde '~' character in the short filename that the PP firmware displays in the list of files to choose from when I go to allocate a file to a logical floppy.  Unfortunately pressing shift-^ on the PP keyboard is ignored.  Is there a way to select a file with a ~ in the filename or do I have to go through and rename these files with valid short names?

Cheers, Graeme

So when you originally shortened the long file name to a 8.3 name I assume you used the ~ to fill in spaces or whatever. I would have suggested to use the - (minus) sign instead and thats probably what you need to do to rename the files manually. I use Bulk Rename Utility when renaming multiple files., get it from https://www.bulkrenameutility.co.uk/Download.php

Hi CM,

I just dragged and dropped disk images onto the SD card in Windows. It was Microsoft's 30 year old implementation of long file names on FAT file systems that creates the short file names storing the long name in hidden directory entries to maintain backwards compatibility.

I was hoping that the PP kernel has a "hidden" key combination to produce the ~ just like shift-DEL does for an underscore (_) character.

Cheers, Graeme

MS-DOS conversions of long file names to 8.3 names always posed problems for me even on a dos PC. For the PP+ I manually changed their file names, for example to arcade1.dsk, games-02.dsk. etc.
