PortaPak System, Spellbinder, Wordstar & Mypad disks - ChickenMan - 17-10-2020

These are all 5.25" disks, double density, double sided 80 tracks of 10 x 512b sectors.  None of them appeared to be original disks as they all had hand written labels.

The PortaPak System disk did not image 100%, there was one bad sector in the boot track. Comparing the boot tracks with the Spellbinder disk, which imaged 100% error free, the System disk image was able to be repaired.  My PortaPak computer is still not working so unable to fully check the disks operation. It should boot up with :-

Spellbinder was an advanced Wordprocessor made by Lexisoft in 1982. This is version 5.3 which is the last CP/M version they made before moving to MS-DOS. Unable to find the CP/M Manual, but the MS-DOS ver 6.1 manual is available here https://winworldpc.com/product/spellbinder/610  This is Spellbinder extracted off the disk and running on the Microbee.

Wordstar disk is version 3.3, the same as available on the Microbee.

The Mypad disk contains a lot of source code and manual for the Mypad Drawing Machine and some roms.

You can use the Patched CPMTools to access the files on the disks. To get a Directory of a disk, use

cpmls -F -f portapak -T dsk portapak.dsk

and to extract the files to a folder called "files" in your cpmtools folder, use

cpmcp -f portapak -T dsk portapak.dsk 0:*.* files

Also recently found was a small review of the Portapak in the Your Computer April 1985 issues, so have included that also in the Portapak folder.

So in the Vintage Repository in the Portapak/Disks folder we placed

portapak_system_disk_80tr.dsk
portapak_spellbinder_80tr.dsk
portapak_wordstar_80tr.dsk
portapak_mypad_80tr.dsk
